My work to begin with post BA was a response to several things... being new to London, having been a dancer for 14 years and then experiencing a course like Sonic Arts.
I responded to all of that with the Amplified series of work. I wanted to make sound art that wasn't necessarily for other sound artists. A lot of those pieces are about perspective, eavesdropping and capturing the sound of an environment in real time. I was playing with the notion that the surrounding space and its contents become the critical part of the artwork once someone interacts with it. Other early pieces are an attempt to demystify technology, making it toy like and evoking an element of play.
Now that I've finished my MA I'm exploring new areas. I wrote my thesis on the Southern Gothic movement in American Literature. I knew about Capote, Faulkner and Tennessee Williams, but I was unaware of the over arching term - Southern Gothic.
I'm originally from Tennessee, but I've never felt compelled to think about the experience of growing up there in terms of my work.
I'm getting started on a series of short experiments and quick pieces about this subject material.
